LONDON — The U.K. has sanctioned the adult daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in a move coordinated with Western allies.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on Friday added Putin’s daughters Katerina Vladimirovna Tikhonova and Maria Vladimirovna Vorontsova, and Lavrov’s daughter Yekaterina Sergeyevna Vinokurova to Britain’s list of individuals sanctioned over Russia’s lethal invasion of Ukraine.
All three will have their assets in the U.K. frozen and won’t be able to travel to Britain or do business with British citizens or companies.
The FCDO said the sanctions are another show of global unity against Russia’s aggression. The U.S. had hit all three with sanctions Wednesday.
“Our unprecedented package of sanctions is hitting the elite and their families, while degrading the Russian economy on a scale Russia hasn’t seen since the fall of the Soviet Union,” U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said, calling on allies to “do more” to cut off Putin’s sources of cash.
The U.K. has also deregistered a private jet owned by Russian oil tycoon Eugene Shvidler, currently at Biggin Hill Airport in southeast London, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced.
The Cessna aircraft was due to undergo maintenance and repairs but its deregistration means the suspension of any certificates to allow it to fly.
Shvidler, a close associate and business partner of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, was added to the U.K. list of sanctioned individuals at the end of March.
“Russian oligarchs who have benefited from Putin’s regime will not be allowed to just go about their business as they were before this completely unprovoked war started,” Shapps told the PA news agency during a visit to the airport. “That’s why we’re actually stripping this off the British aircraft register. This plane will not be going anywhere for the foreseeable future.”
In early March, the government banned Russian aircraft from U.K. airspace following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and introduced powers to detain such planes, and remove aircraft belonging to sanctioned individuals and entities from the U.K. register.
