Live blog: First round of French presidential election

The French vote today in the first round of the presidential election. They will have to choose from 12 candidates, including incumbent Emmanuel Macron, far right leader Marine Le Pen, TV-pundit-turned-candidate Eric Zemmour and far-left firebrand Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

The two candidates who gather the most votes on Sunday will move to the second round, scheduled for April 24.

First projections by leading polling institutes — usually close to the final outcome — will be out at 8 p.m., with official results published later tonight.
