Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday announced that a raise of the minimum wage will be implemented from May 1, the second raise after the increase at the beginning of the year.
The Greek government had already increased the monthly gross minimum wage by two percent on January 1 this year, raising it up to €663 per month. The upcoming increase of the minimum wage “will be a significant one, it will be much higher than the 2 percent rise,” Mitsotakis said in an interview with ANT1 television.
Greece is facing high inflation — 5.1 percent in December — driven by booming energy prices. “We estimate that this disturbance will be more intense in the first three months of 2022 before it subsides,” Mitsotakis said. The prime minister also stated that he was “cautiously optimistic” about the pandemic.
Over the past months, Greece has subsidized the majority of households’ power bills to make energy costs more affordable. The country announced an additional €400 million relief package this week.
