The European Union and India are launching a trade and technology council in an attempt to deepen cooperation between the two partners, they said in a joint press release Monday.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is in New Delhi for a two-day visit and met with India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday. The announcement comes as the U.K. looks to boost its defense exports to India against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine.

"Both sides agreed that rapid changes in the geopolitical environment highlight the need for joint in-depth strategic engagement," the joint press statement said. This aims at giving a framework for political and technical cooperation, according to the press release.

The EU executive is expected to begin formal negotiations with India for deals on free trade, investment and geographical indications in June.
