European Council President Charles Michel canceled his appearances at the European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg on Wednesday after a high-risk COVID-19 contact.

Michel announced on Twitter that he would not attend the session. He did not say who was the close contact that had tested positive. On Monday, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen similarly announced that she had canceled her Strasbourg events and was returning to Brussels, because her driver had tested positive for the virus.

Michel appeared in person at a memorial service for Parliament President David Sassoli in Strasbourg on Monday evening, where he delivered a speech.

Michel was due to participate in a Parliament debate Wednesday afternoon about the results of the December European Council summit, which focused on the pandemic and other topics.
